Minimum Target Grade

Currently my ALIS target grade is a D.

My predicted grade is a C.

Embossing

In order to create an embossing I made a paper relief using card.  I then placed my relief on the albion press and placed the sheet of damp paper on top and the rolled it through the press to emboss the paper.


What equipments was used:
Scissors
Glue
Paper
Card
Tray of water
Albion press


I found the final outcome impressing, however I am not planning to use this technique as in my opinion it is time consuming and not very interesting to work on.

How have your original ideas / concepts changed from the start of the project? 

-My original ideas/concepts have changed from the start of this project as I was not looking deep into experimenting with all this material. 

How have your original ideas developed through experimenting with techniques, materials and equipment?

-My original ideas have developed through experimenting with different materials, equipment and techniques, as I have learnt new skills while experimenting.

How have your original ideas developed as a result of researching the work of others? 

-My original ideas have also developed by looking at a few artists.

Do you think your ideas will continue to change and develop as your work progresses? Do you have any further experimenting / research to do that you think might change / improve your ideas?

-I believe that my ideas will continue to develop as my work progresses, this is because I may develop many ideas as I go along. I have made further experiments in order to improve and develop ideas.

Shading Experiment With Pastels

Derwent Pastel Blocks

I have experimented with pastels as I find them easy to use and blend in order to create a texture and to use tone.  There is also a variety of colours which also enables me to add the littlest detail.

Graphite Sticks/Pencils

I have experimented with Graphite pencils as they come in a variety of tone which enables me to achieve what I am aiming for. You can add the detail in Dark, medium and light. This is another technique I enjoyed, in my opinion it makes the work look quite artistic, however just in one tone. Also they are nice to shade in with in order to capture little detail.

Rubbing Experiment

Here is my experiment with the word "Paris". I have used different techniques in order to get different textures. The materials I have used are, charcoal sticks and pastels on different textured paper. 

Primary Research Visit

The exhibition took place at Southbank centre, Hayward gallery 22 February-13 May 2012. 

Jeremy Deller and David Shrigley were exhibiting. 

Jeremy Deller is an highly influential artist. Turner prize winner Jeremy Deller has helped to re-write the rules of contemporary art in many respects.

British artist David Shrigley is best known for his humourous drawings that make witty and wry observations on everyday life.

Trained as a fine artist, his deliberately crude graphic style gives his work an immediate and accessible appeal, while simultaneously offering insightful commentary on the absurdities of human relationships.

Material Experiment-Polyblock

What is Polyblock printing?

Polyblock printing is drawing on polystyrene and making marks, afterwards taking ink to print it of a piece of paper.

First I took a piece of thin polystyrene and an image to draw from. The next step was to draw the picture on the polystyrene with a blunt pencil. I tried to dig into the shapes as much as I can as I wanted to get an impression of what I am trying to demonstrate. After I drew the image into the polystyrene, I got some thick printing ink and roller it onto a smooth flat surface.

I completed this and therefore with a little pressure I rolled the ink onto the image on the polystyrene and placed the ink side down onto the surface.

Lastly I gently and very carefully lifted the polystyrene from the surface. Which ended up as a success.

Lino Printing Experiments

Here is an experiment of Lino printing. I chose the Eiffel Tower as I thought it may be an interesting tower that is very popular worldwide, therefore I considered experimenting with it. I enjoyed experimenting with the Eiffel Tower because it is a complex structure so I could add detail. Also in my opinion the Eiffel Tower is a great design from the architectural point of view.

Lino Printing

Lino Characteristics: 
Smooth, durable, bendy, flat, tough, hard, thin, reinforced, cuttable and you can carve it.

Advantages:
Carve it
Print it
Emboss/Rubbings
Reduction printing
Tough/ Sturdy
Print onto different surfaces
Easy for simple designs or bigger designs

Disadvantages:
Mistakes are un-reversible
Not 3D
You have to work hard to get a texture
Hard to cut
Limited colour application, rollers etc.
Hard to clean and hard to get off hands
Barrier cream for hands
White spirit- Fumes
Long time to dry
Time consuming
Difficult to get detail


Using the equipment such as bench hooks and a Lino cutting tool we carved the design we drew out beforehand. Afterwards, I carved the details as carefully as I could. Once I completed the carving I then painted it using a roller, then I used the Albion press to print it out onto paper.
